  1. Post #1) Originally I chose to read the novel The Color Purple simply because I recognized the same title of that of the critically acclaimed movie but once I began reading it, did I now discover what was truly in the title name. In The Color Purple, author Alice Walker addresses the issues that plague society through the abused and unappreciated Celie’s voice as she tells her life story through her letters to God while simultaneously describing the lives and problems faced by the people involved in her life. Alice Walker’s ability to address the story of several characters and their issues through character intertwining is a writing style I highly admired about the novel. Told through the written letter of Celie, Nettie and God, it allows for Walker to bring into light the many issues and subjects that resided in the South during the early 1900’s for both African Americans and women such as abusive relationships, gender roles, and themes of religion, sexism, racism, and homosexuality. Alongside these, Walker also slightly addresses the world issue of imperialism with the fictional tribe of the Olinkas in Monrovia, Africa. Celie’s confessional tone and southern colloquialism gave this novel the raw, powerful yet poignant component that emotionally impacted me to feel sympathy for her and evaluate my own character when hardships arise.
